Lullaby (1980)
for Flute, Horn, and Harp

In the early 1980's, I wrote one concert of original chamber music per year for four years.  However, the first concert that I wrote was never performed, for a variety of reasons.  The music was difficult, I had trouble finding musicians, and the concert turned out to be quite a bit too short.  I have since referred to this concert as Chamber Concert No. 0.  Eventually some but not all of the music was performed.  LULLABY for flute, horn, and harp was written for this Chamber Concert No. 0.

The music for this concert was influenced by minimalism.  It features several levels of repeating patterns.  At each repetition, one of the patterns changes, so that, with all the repetition, nothing is actually the same.  LULLABY was named because of the rocking motion of the patterns, though the baby would probably wake up in the middle.  I also arranged the work for flute, viola, and harp under the title Vision By The Lake.
