Trio (1983)
for Flute, Viola, and Piano
1, Allegro non troppo & 2. Andante con moto

In the early 1980's, I wrote one concert of original chamber music per year for four years.  TRIO for Flute, Viola, and Piano was written for Chamber Concert No. 3 which took place on March 16, 1983.  The concert featured flute, viola, and piano.  The other works on the program were Sonata (1982) for viola and piano, and Short Set (1982) for flute and piano.

As the finale of the chamber music concert, the work not only includes all the instruments, but also recaps the forms of the previous pieces.  The outer movements are sonata movements like the Viola Sonata, and the inner two movements are song movements like Short Set.  The work accentuates the formal symmetry by playing each half attacca.

The second movement uses the tune "Waiting for the Sunrise", which I had written seven years earlier for my first improvisatory group.  The third movement uses the tune I call "Schizo Scherzo", because of its use of alternating 2/4 and 3/4 meters.
