Program Notes with Score Video

Improvisatory Concert was one of five works I transcribed from improvisations between 1977-1980.  The other works are Concerto for Double Bass (1977), Brass Quintet (1978), Couplet For A Desert Summer (1980), and Two Impromptus (1980)

The improvisation comes from a set of improvs I made in a recording studio in 1979, that I refer to as Session ’79.  Most of the transcriptions eventually were orchestrated for different groups of instruments, but Improvisatory Concert and Two Impromptus, I felt, were best left as works for solo piano.  I performed the work many times in the 1980’s, the first was for an exploratory concert for the Arizona Composers Forum in the Spring of 1983 in Tucson, AZ.
